"Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself."
Desiderius Erasmus
The lights are back on in downtown New York.
"Normal" will not return for a longer time for many who were in the path of Sandy, but meanwhile the media is taking time from their constant annoying political spin to tell the stories of the selflessness of so many who braved the dangers to help a neighbor, be it a stranger or a friend.
People from all over have lent a hand in any way they can. It does the spirit good to know that we truly do live in a wonderful world. The lights seem to be a little brighter because of the the kindness of the human heart.
And BTW, I am doing OK.

Glad you are doing o.k. These tragedies always bring out the best in people.
ReplyDeleteHello Arleen:
ReplyDeleteThis is good news indeed. One never ceases to be amazed at the wonderful spirit of so many people in times of adversity. It restores one's faith in human nature.
Glad you are OK....glad the lights are on....really glad there were some examples of human kindness during this insanity.
ReplyDeleteAfter all the negative political commentary, it is good to hear the stories of simple human kindness.
ReplyDeleteI am glad on both counts. Firstly and more importantly that you are ok, and also that human kindness was in hiding, not dead. Very good news - and thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew was assigned from his regular job to drive generators from Harrisburg to the coast for FEMA. They were allowed to drive non-stop and he's young enough to feel a rogue thrill in hard work and rule breaking to save the day. I love his Facebook posts.
ReplyDeleteDear Arleen, so relieved to learn that all is okay where you are. Your posting today was quite lovely. It made me feel grateful to be alive. Peace.
ReplyDeleteYour post is indeed good news! Recovering from disaster takes a very long time. My son in NJ said his office was under water, and today he is cleaning out and trying to salvage what he can.
ReplyDeleteKeep well and strong, Arleen.
It will rise again, as NY always does. My friends down there are coping and helping as they can. My family, old and frustrated that they can't be of much use, is holed up partying until things get better. The human spirit really is indomitable.
ReplyDeleteGreat to know that you're doing OK and you've got neighbours around worth their weight in gold. Great to have the lights on again too.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you are doing ok. It was good to see the marathoners lending a hand over the weekend, and yes...having a break from political news.
ReplyDeleteArleen, I, too, believe there are many more unselfish and giving people than the opposite. I am so pleased to hear you are doing well.
ReplyDeleteLuckily my 16 year old car passed its WOF with no work needed. Hope winter isn't too harsh for you.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you're doing okay. One of my favorite stories about the storm's aftermath is how, after the marathon was canceled, something like a thousand runners stayed in New York to help with clean-up, etc.
ReplyDeleteBTW Arleen, I just saw this comment you wrote on my blog on Oct. 9th
ReplyDelete"Yeah, I would like to turn the gravity down also. I am feeling much more anxious than I did a couple of weeks ago, and feel a sense of dread. Where did I put that Hershey bar?"
That was just before Sandy became an issue.
So glad you are ok. I'd send ice cubes but they might melt before they got there. Hope you have electricity. I look forward to your comments on my blog and I have missed them. Now I know why. I didn't remember that you were in Sandy's path
ReplyDeleteHi Arleen,
ReplyDeleteAnd in the face of such trauma, such adversity, the power of true and caring human spirit, shines brightly through. With a sense of relief for you and your loved ones, may the bright light of human compassion, glow with wonder, no matter what. Thank you for a most thoughtful post.
In kindness, Gary
Hope you're still doing okay Arleen. I'm so sorry that Sandy has decided to strike again. Take care of yourself and your family. Julie
ReplyDeleteHope things are settling down for you. In adversity we find that most of us are kind; there is hope for humankind after all.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are o.k....and it does appear that American is stepping up to the plate with the help that is needed.
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Jo
