Being Perfect

Beautiful summer days and I am doing OK.

I was choosing a new picture for my header and I loved this one of a double Hibiscus that I have growing in my garden.  The flowers only last for a day or so but they are a magnificent sight when they just get to full bloom.  I thought it was a beautiful picture to end the month of June.  However, when I enlarged it, I saw that there were spots on it and I hesitated because it was not perfect.  I had a few others to choose from, but I kept going back to that flower.  Sure it might have been a little past it's crowning moment, it had a bruise or two, but it was looking up to the sunshine and was taking in all it could.

Then there was this cookie I made:

My taste buds didn't notice the broken candy.  It was yummy!

Being imperfect is just perfect!

  1. You said it! Imperfection has its own form of perfection. The Hibiscus, spots and all, is lovely in its own way. And you sure knew that.

I now have this urge for a cookie! :)

    1. Being a scratch and dent item myself, perfect has never been an aspiration of mine.

  2. The bloom is a happy red riot, Arleen. Its imperfections keep it from being mistaken for fireworks.

  3. Fireworks! You described that flower wonderfully, Geo. I will never look at that plant now without thinking of the 4th of July.

  4. A beautiful flower. Almost as lovely as the cookie.

  5. They both look wonderful. Any chance of you sharing the cookie recipe? And I love your description of yourself as a 'scratch and dent' item. Snap.

  6. I've just gone through your last three posts. Great stuff. My family is coming for a month starting next week. I was beginning my lists because I must make everything perfect-thank goodness you woke me up from that little fairy tale!

    1. I also make lists, because I like to be prepared. However, after a few days, the list becomes impractical and it is easier to go with the flow. Have a wonderful time with your family.

  7. Hibiscus, yes; sugar laced cookie, no.

    1. Every now and then, Cro, a sugar-laced cookie is perfect thing to lift one's spirits. They always make my grandchildren smile, and what could be better than that.

  8. I think that Hibiscus makes the grade on colour alone!
As for the cookie (we would call that a biscuit and what you call a biscuit we call a scone) and I think cookies/biscuits/scones are improved by being broken.

    1. It is a magnificent color, Bazza and as Geo said, it looks like an explosion of fireworks.

As you know, a biscuit here is a sugarless, somewhat tasteless , light roll served with a meal. Cookies are an explosion of sugar and are hard to resist.

  9. Arleen, I loved this post. I have been working on a post regarding perfection. I am learning the need to accept perfection is unattainable, but it is painful. Love the cookie picture...Have a wonderful holiday week. B.

  10. We know it is unattainable, but that does not mean we don't try.

Have a great holiday weekend yourself, Bonnie.

  15. I love the new header and wouldn't have notice anything wrong if you hadn't pointed it out. Heck, most of us have a bruise or two and are past our crowning moment! Yay for the flower and for those of us who bloom no matter how tough it is and no matter how short the moment. :)

  16. Yes, Lexa, that is what I was trying to say. The flower is a metaphor. I loved your comment. It is perfect!

    1. It's a wonderful metaphor and what would life be without a few bruises, eh? A marvelous post, "good on ya!"

  17. Spots in th picture? What spots? I don't se any. And the cookie looks delightful, too!

Hope you had a good fourth of July, Arleen!

  18. Absolutely! If there were only room in this world for perfection, it'd be a bleak and empty place. (Not that I'd be around to see it, mind you... HA!)

Great post. LOVE the hibiscus. Its color is magnificent. And the cookie? Never met one I didn't like. Might have to bake some today... It's time for a treat, right?

  19. Hello Arleen,
I have never posted to you before but I read your Blog with great glee. I love your attitude toward life and its joys &
challenges and you have a sure-fire way of lifting my spirits when needed. As for pursuit of perfection, Bah Humbug! There is far too much of that in USA, especially among we women. I wish I could link to you but can't, so I will just refer you to Anne Lamott on perfection -- which she calls poisonous. Your readers are wonderful & always a joy, as well. Thank you for being out here, Arleen!

  20. Like everyone else on here I too did not notice spots. The beauty of it was all I could see.
Now that cookie is another story all together. Yummy! I never met a cookie I did not love. Cookies are my weakness and this one looks like one I could not just eat one of.
Hope your having a good week and like always I am glad I came by tonight.
    Love ya
    Maggie

  21. Trying to make everything perfect always seems to me a recipe for stress and even unhappiness.

  22. The color of your hibiscus is glorious. Its spots make it a real flower, if not, we could think it is artificial, maybe even made of plastic. The most interesting women do not have perfect faces – a Barbie look is too dull.

  23. Your picture is gorgeous, even with a couple of spots. Who cares if it isn't perfect - it's very real. Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I hope to start posting at least once a week - maybe two times a week. Not sure I can come up with enough stuff to talk about for each day!

  24. Your red hibiscus is glorious in all its imperfections, and so is that yummy cookie and so are we humans.
