Inconveniences

I slipped down some stairs a few weeks ago, but I am doing OK.

I got up this morning but my feet did not want to do the same.  They seemed to want to remain asleep and not be the wheels of my day.  I insisted, so they begrudgingly obliged.   They have been doing this a lot lately but come to life in a matter of minutes after I get my motor running. It is no big deal and I have decided to put this inconvenience in the column of my life under the title, "the crap I have to put up with".

I looked up some quotes from people much smarter than myself and their take on aging.  None of these are too deep, and they did put a smile on my face.

"We get too old quick, too late smart"
Old Dutch proverb

- Yep, we have all made mistakes.  Lessons learned are to be cherished, even if they hurt.  It has taken me a lifetime to become this brilliant.
A

"The age of a woman does not matter, the best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles."
Ralph Waldo Emerson.-

I have more time to listen, and have experienced some of the sweetest music.  I am just hoping that my strings don't snap.
A

"Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again."
C.S . Lewis

 - I have been married 47 years.  On the other hand, I have been married 47 years. I will never go back to innocence.  I grew up reading the Grim Fairy Tales, now it is all about 50 Shades of Grey.  I can't relate to either.
A

"Age is not a particular interesting subject; anyone can get old.  All you have to do is live long enough"
Groucho Marx

- I will answer with Groucho's own line. "Time flies like an arrow; Fruit flies like a banana.
G

Simply said, but it is about making the most of the moments you have and always, always,  watch your step.

  1. I'm so very very sorry to hear about your fall. That is not fun. Hopefully you didn't do any permanent damage somewhere in your body. Your list of getting older has me giggling, and the sad part is most of it is true.

    1. No, I just hurt my knee and my pride. There is no way to fall gracefully.

  2. Sorry, I forgot to tell you how much I love your header. That kitty looks like he/she is digging to china! he he - must be something good down there, or kitty just likes the feel of snow.

    1. That was my sweet little kitten, Miss Kit the first time she saw snow. She ran around in such delight and actually made small snow balls with her paws and threw them. She was such a delight. I do miss her.

  4. Ouch, your unexpected trip down the stairs sounded a bit painful, Arleen. Hope you're well on the mend again. Love all your little gems, they put a smile on my face as well.

  5. I hope you are over the worst. I keep slipping on the stairs, misjudging the length. I should get my eyes checked but until then I am holding tight to the railing. I think I'm going to make myself a fun list of all the pleasures accruing, like rereading fairy tales.

    1. It was about a misjudgment, however, I have been there before, and have always survived.

  6. Talking with a friend the other day I was only saying that my mind is still young, but my body is arguing with it...and me! Too many aches and pains and grunts! lol

Watch those stairs and go down the slower way, the proper way...one at a time...not all at once, Arleen!!! Take care.

    I love the quotes. :)

  7. Sorry to hear about your fall.
Here's another quote from George Burns that I like.
You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there.

  8. The stairs were a trip, eh? Actually, I had a snappy remark to leave, but also had to leave to get children from school. I came home, my screen came up to this very spot, but with even more comments, and I could not remember mine. Part of getting old. Love the darling kitty.

    1. Yes, the trip was not one I had planned. However, I was proud that I could still pop up.

  9. Sorry you slipped on the stairs. Hope your knee feels better, and your feet are more cooperative. Have you had any physical therapy? These were all great quotes. My favorite one was about hoping your strings don't snap! I can't believe you've been married for 47 years! You must have married very young. Take care of yourself, Arleen!

    1. You are right. I was married at three. He was a cradle robber even though he is a year younger. At that age, I did not know that the burping, the farting, and his princedom would ever annoy me. Such an innocent was I. Somehow, we have worked it out over these years. However, neither of us hear well and that has helped enormously.

  11. I'm so sorry you fell. Good to read that you weren't seriously hurt. That's happened to me before, and it's rather unpleasant. You seem to have an excellent attitude about it though, which always helps.

Hope your swelling goes down, and that your skinned knee heals up soon.

    1. I missed a step and down I went in the lobby of s restaurant. The good thing was that it was not a busy night and no one saw my roll around on the floor. It was very undignified, and I kept my mouth shut about the incident - until now.

  12. 47 years? That's a really serious relationship. I've only been married 45 years but will get used to it in time. Please be careful on the stairs, Arleen, and I'll quit falling off the pruning ladder. Deal?

    1. Yes, Geo, I realized that this relationship might last when we celebrated our 45th. It got serious then.

  13. Hello Arleen,

Oh dear, we are sorry to hear of your fall but at least pleased that you did not do serious damage. It is difficult to fall gracefully....we usually manage to reveal far more than we would choose to do under such circumstances! All we can hope for is that it happened in private or, at least, did not draw a huge crowd of onlookers!

Your quotations on ageing are certainly bittersweet. It is sadly true that so many have more than a ring of truth about them.

    1. It was somewhat private in a public place and I made little of it. I figured that was my only option.

Like you, Jane and Lance, I find that it is always best to keep your dignity and try to smile through the more difficult circumstances. I find that I recover much quicker that way.

  14. Love the quotes! Sorry to hear of your fall, but glad you're ok (?). Aging is a bitch...and that's all we can do about it. You have a great sense of humor, Arleen; love your posts.

  15. Falling down stairs takes a lot of grace of one sort or the other. Hope the bruised parts are fading. My fall down stairs left be with a big black bruise on my buttocks. I think it is starting to fade after 27 years.

    1. 27 years....... Susan, that must have been a doozy of a fall. I have found through all my falls, that the bruise fades, but the pain comes back every now and then.

  16. You're lucky no one was around with a smart phone to capture your "fall from grace" onto your posterior for all posterity. I trust your knee is almost back to normal by now. Or at least normal for our age. (Dontcha hate it when you go to the doctor, and he prefaces what he's gonna say with, "You're at the age..." (bah, humbug!)

None of us can do a doggone thing about getting older, but at least we can laugh about it. We've gotta watch our step, and never ever test the water with both feet.

    Happy Valentine's Day!

    1. The knee hurts, but what the heck, at this point, there is always something that needs some WD40 or the like. I am just happy that I bounced back up quickly before someone called 911 and took whatever dignity I had left.

  17. You poor thing! I'm glad you're all right, except for your feet. Maybe they'll be happier when the spring thaw comes. I love the Dutch quote and the new header pic - what a cute kitty in the snow! Happy Valentine's Day! :)

  18. Hi Arleen. My favourite quote on this topic is that "Youth is wasted on the young" which I think was said by George Bernard Shaw.
I hope your slip and fall wasn't too bad and that you are now OK!

  20. OH NO is Right! I sure hated to come by here this morning and read this about you. Falls can be really bad and I hate that it happened to you. I hope that you are not hurt bad and that you went to the doctor. A fall is the reason I had to give up law enforcement and every day I worry about it happening again.
You take care and I will keep you in my prayers. I am having a really great book giveaway by Dr. McCoy so if you can come by and put your name in the hat.
    Love

  21. Hi Arleen,

Not exactly a pleasant mishap. Hoping that your recovery is in full swing from the fall and the embarrassment has slipped, Then again, Madonna falls on stage in London and the whole world finds out.

Time for me, sixty one and still skateboarding, to go make a fool of myself. Have a pleasant weekend.
