Cry Me A River

Christmas is packed up and put away and I am doing OK.

Buddy Crying Clip ArtI admit it, I love sad chick flicks.  Just thinking about Beaches, Fried Green Tomatoes, Steel Magnolias, and the queen of them all, The Notebook,  makes me misty-eyed.  Yeah, there is nothing like a good cry, especially when you are sharing the moment with women who understand your joy of  pain.  My daughters were wonderful to have around when re-watching one of these movies.  We would get out our boxes of tissues and bawl together.  It was a good bonding experience and wiping our noses in sync were tender moments I will treasure forever.

Yesterday, with my dear friend Barbara, I went to see Les Miserables.  Tears started flowing within five minutes and it got better and better every minute after.  Though the movie was l-o-n-g, I loved and wept through it all.  I have to say I have seen numerous adaptations of this story and have enjoyed them all.  The book speaks to my liberal heart and the injustices I see in this world, but the marvelous, poignant music and exceptional acting in this film stole my heart.  It was worth sitting in a theater seat for 2 hours and 38 minutes with my legs cramping up and my butt getting sore.  It was a beautiful movie and I cried my eyes out.  Oh, happy day!

  1. Good morning,,,,,I, too, used to cry buckets at every touching movie I saw....but I don't seem to do that anymore. Although Les Miserables might just do the trick.

    Have a wonderful new year.

    1. I have had some pity parties in the past, but all in all, my life is pretty good.

  3. Oh yes! "The Notebook". I had seen it a few years ago. Then 2 years ago, my hubby and I watched it again on Netflix. Only thing is....I forgot the story line. Imagine the river running down my face because it was 1 month after my mother passed away, and 6 months since my father passed before her. But the tears were cathartic. In other news, Yes, I can't wait to see "Les Miserables". I expect Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe really bring the characters to life! We did see the movie some time ago with Liam Neeson. Sorry...didn't mean to ramble on!

    1. The Notebook is a full box of tissues and a real ugly crying face movie.

  4. I LOVE a good cry over a movie or book. ('Course, even TV commercials can make ME cry...)

I'm sure I'd love this new version of "Les Miserables", but I simply cannot bear sitting still in a theater for that long. Neither can my hubby. Darn it, we'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

  5. Yes, I am also a sucker for Hallmark Cards. An insurance ad got to me also when they showed the devastation that Sandy brought to the Northeast. However, later on the news told the story about the home owners suing the company for using their house in the ad. It seems that same insurance company had turned down their claim.

  6. Reading your post, I don't know whether to 'laugh or cry'! As far as Les Miserables -- I cried when I read the book as a teenager, I cried when I saw the old film with Fredric March and Charles Laughton, and no doubt this new movie will have me weeping as well!

  7. I cry as soon as my wife suggests we watch a chick-flick but "Les Miserables" is always an exception.

    1. I have worked on my hubby, one movie at a time. He will go to most "emotion packed" movies with me and he is no longer kicking and screaming.

  9. I'm going to see Les Mis on Sunday. I'd better take some tissues (for the women of course). I am three-quarters way through the book and I have seen the show three times. The London production which has gone around the world has been running for 25 years!

    1. As I said, it is a 10 tissue movie. Bring some extra, just in case some woman needs them. There was not a dry eye in the theater when Bring Him Home was sung.

    1. Your prince will love it, however he will probably complain about its length. Just remind him that most sports games are longer.

  12. Right! Besides tthe marvelous acting, music and story, the sets are breathtaking. Up to this point, I thought Lincoln was the best movie I saw this year (I cried at that one also), but now I have to say that I loved this one more.

  13. I cry over books. And reread them. And cry again. And, for some particular favourites, I will start to cry pages BEFORE the sad part. My partner thinks I am nuts.

    2. Thank you. We had a beautiful snowfall and the grandkids made a snowman in my front yard. It looked so pretty that evening but rather than go out in the cold to take the picture, I took it through the window.

  14. I also really enjoyed Les Miserables, though it was a bit long. I really lost it in the scene where he pinned on the medal. Since then, I've been practicing sing crying or cry-sing which is not an easy task. They deserve Oscars for that alone.

  16. I'm going to be seeing Les Miserables. I quite like a good cry and nothing to do with staring at myself in the mirror. I remember bawling my eyes out when I went to see the film, "The Elephant Man", way back in 1980.

  18. The movies you mentioned are some of my favorites, especially The Notebook. I am excited to see Les Miserables. I'm hoping to see it soon. I saw the theatre version when I was in high school and it has stuck with me

  20. Hey Mrs. Boruta! I saw Les Mis a few weeks ago at The Movie Tavern. It was my first experience with the story. I thought the story, the acting, the singing all were tremendous. Have you seen any of the other big movies? I keep hearing great things about Lincoln but haven't had a chance to see it yet.

    1. Go see Life of Pi. Other than being one of the most beautiful visual movies I have seen, the story is so exciting and interesting. The 3D version is probably better, but is still wonderful in the 2D (which we saw). Lincoln is also remarkable.

  21. Oh, I'd rather forego popcorn than watch a movie where I'm forced to cry. FOUL!! NOT FAIR!

I prefer horror movies. That way, I can always smile and think "Well, at least my life is better than THAT!"

  22. I read the book, might as well see the movie!
